My name is John Wyckoff.
I retired from my career job with IBM over 30 years ago. Now at 83 years of age, I am still working as a self-employed owner of two businesses.
I grew up in Springfield, NJ where I attended elementary school in the 1940’s and high school and college in the 1950’s. Being, 5 to 15 years after WWII, it was a peaceful time. My family was not farmers, but I grew up in a farming area. As kids our days after school were spent outdoors playing all kinds of activities; mostly sports, with neighborhood friends.
My post high school education was a Bachelor’s of Engineering Degree from Stevens Institute of Technology and a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California. My master’s degree was obtained on a fellowship from Hughes Aircraft where I worked when not attending school. Following my formal education, I joined IBM as an electronics engineer designing circuits and later spending many years in upper management. I took early retirement at the age of 51 after 29 years with the IBM; most of those years being in Vermont.
For the next ten years after retirement my wife and I owned and operated three businesses; a small motel, a business counseling and tax business and a payroll service. Having gotten older and no longer happy spending winter in cold Vermont, we moved south to Pawleys Island, SC where we lived for ten years prior to moving to our current home in Conover, NC.
During the years in South and North Carolina, I volunteered in many organizations, formed several clubs and organizations, taught at a local college and established a corporation used to design websites. I designed many websites for both profit and gratis. I also designed a website for a trust of which I still manage and work for today. Recently, I formed another corporation with which I have gotten involved in selling at our own online store as well as selling on Amazon and currently also tinkering with affiliate marketing.
My latest endeavor is publishing this blog for retirees and for those about to retire, called Retired….What Now?; posting twice a week. For every blog post I also create a video which is on my YouTube channel. Many of the blog postings are serious, but I frequently add human interest stories which are for fun! In addition, I have Facebook, linkedIn and Instagram social media accounts.
In this blog I will discuss businesses owned and operated, organizations started an ran, subjects studied and learned, and put to use for fun and compensation, involved in activities, ways of saving money and much more. By sharing my experiences it’s my intent to provide you some ideas of things you might consider doing to enjoy a long retirement while having fun.
This blog will not only be serious, but will also provide FUN reading by frequently sharing short “Human Interest Stories”. These stories will address interesting, funny and lucky events experienced throughout my lifetime.
Much of my blog content and other information will also be available as videos on YouTube and on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram.
I have recently started creating podcasts of my blogs and videos. It is my intention to make all of my blog postings available as Podcasts. These podcasts will be available on iTunes, Google Play and Stitcher. Check them out periodically!
Certain products and links to those products on this site will earn an affiliate commission for any purchases you make. My goal with the blog is, by sharing my experiences, to help educate you on the possibilities that exist for retirees in practically any field, but please understand I will be making some income from affiliates. See Affiliate Disclaimer.
I’m not all work; I enjoy playing golf and exercise regularly. In addition, my wife and I spend time with our family, travel a few times a year and eat out frequently.
Stay active, have fun and don’t let yourself to become a “Couch Potato”!
